What is Parts Work (IFS)?
Inside yourself, you are multiple. This doesn’t mean you have a disorder, it just means that you are human. Think of any relationship you have, for example, a friendship: A part of you loves your friend, another part of you is jealous of her, another part of you is resentful that she is always late.
Parts Work is the practice of listening to these voices. There are different traditions for working with parts, but here, I am drawing from the work of Richard Schwartz, also called Internal Family Systems, thus named because each of us has a family or group of parts living within us.
Our “parts” speak to us through thoughts, emotions and sensations. They have different roles, emotions and needs. In essence, they are like little beings. We can dialogue with them and learn from them. We can also help them to heal.
Some of our parts can feel quite challenging, for example, a tender heart, an anxious belly or the thought of not being good enough. It doesn't work so well to repress them or try to change them. Instead, we center in "Self," the word Schwartz gives to our inner witness, and greet our parts from here.
We listen to their messages for us and find out what they are needing. Often we find very young parts of us longing to get the healing they never had. When they feel supported and respected, they can release burdens, move through old feelings and personal transformation can occur with ease.
